The art collection of the National Museum of the Revolution of Dignity: a history of creation and composition

During the winter of 2013–2014, the events of the revolution caused a huge creative awakening from the professional artists and the protestors. The art became a reflection of everything that happened in Maidan Square, starting with the students’ beating by Berkut soldiers.

The process of funds formation for the National Museum of the Revolution of Dignity (including the art collection) began even before its institutional start. A group of museum workers decided to start preserving the history of the Revolution of Dignity in the winter of 2013/2014. The activity was divided into two types: collectional (directly at the barricades) and educational (in the media space). The group created the Maidan Museum initiative group in January 2014. In the following fall, it merged with the Museum of Freedom initiative.

The Maidan Museum / Museum of Freedom initiative group began to work on the concept of the future Museum. It continued to collect testimonies and artifacts and to provide for the main functions of the Museum – the preservation, research, and promotion of the things, objects, and places related to the Revolution of Dignity. The idea and the process of the Museum creation were supported by other initiatives of Maidan, as well as by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, the Kyiv City State Administration, a number of museums and the ICOM Ukrainian Committee. The families of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred and protesters became participants in the Museum institution creation.

Since the creation of the Museum in January 2016, there has been a gradual enlargement of its funds, including works of art. These include paintings, graphics, sculpture, and mixed technics, as well as self-defense tools of the Maidan protesters. The artists turned them into art objects that became symbols of the Revolution of Dignity.

Artists whose works are represented in the fund collection are Alevtina Kakhidze, Lesia Khomenko, Olia Rondiak, Olexiy Beliusenko, Vasyl Korchynskyi, Oleksandr Roitburd, Maria Zolotova, Ivan Semesiuk, Andrii Yermolenko, Oleksa Mann, the art initiatives of the Mystetska sotnia (the Art Hundred), “Artil Maidan” and others. The Maidan inspired the artists to create something. Sometimes it made them change creative directions and techniques. Some people remained loyal to their artistic styles, but they adopted new creative processes. The art collection of the Maidan Museum represents all changes in the life of art and each particular artist. Their works became a reflection of the events of the revolution and reflections on them.
